If you were at the Kaos At Kombat event you may have heard me describe Paulo as always putting on the most exciting performance of the night whenever he competes. Well today it is official, Paulo Dultra has been chosen to be sponsored by CASK and the government of Canada to be an official sponsored athlete. The money isn’t much but the honor is something special as this is rare in our sport.
So please join us in congratulating Paulo for receiving this honor. And for representing Kombat and Canada with distinction.
Perhaps I forgot to mention, Paulo will be joining team Canada in Austria this October….
Thanks Kru Joey for sharing the awesome news with us.
Tonight on The Ultimate Fighter….Kimbo Slice, Internet Backyard Fighting sensation meets former IFL Heavyweight Champion Roy “Big Country” Nelson in what promises to be the biggest, highest rated fight in TUF History.
Now let’s be clear, I hate street fighting. Period.
And I hate people that represent combative athletes as street fighters. We are NOT street fighters, we are Martial Artists. We aspire to a higher ideal. And one day I hope to see Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts (NOT Ultimate Fighting) in the olympics alongside other amazing sports such as Tae Kwon Do, Wrestling and Boxing.
But I do not hate Kimbo Slice.
Why? …..
Because he has an inspirational story to tell on how he rose above street fighting and turned his talents and efforts to sports not the streets. In many ways, Martial Arts, Boxing Gyms, and numerous types of athletic pursuits have helped get people off of the streets and make a better life for themselves. And Kimbo has made a better life for himself and is doing his best to represent us and the sport properly.
So that is why I do not hate Kimbo Slice. Now why is this fight so interesting?
For those of you not familiar with his past, Kimbo was signed to EliteXC, a now defunct MMA Promotion. Alot of people felt that EliteXC was feeding Kimbo lesser opponents to help make him a big star and sell PPV Tickets. Well all this fell apart when Kimbo lost to a former contestant of The Ultimate Fighter reality show. After ElieXC went bankrupt Dana White, president of the UFC dared Kimbo to come on the show and prove that he has what it takes to be in arguably the premier league for Mixed Martial Arts. Well, low and behold, Kimbo came….
And so did Big Country. Roy Nelson, like many MMA stars, feel that they have been overlooked because of people like Kimbo. So he has a message he wants to send. Meanwhile everyone will finally get the answer to the question that Dana White has been asking, “Is Kimbo a Mixed Martial Artist?”
So tonight should be quite interesting.
I say yes he is a Mixed Martial Artist, but unfortunately for him and his fans I think Roy Nelson, who has been training far longer is going to show what it takes to survive in MMA. It takes years of hard work and dedication. And while I think Kimbo has the heart of a lion, he just has not been doing this long enough to compete with someone of Nelson’s caliber ……. yet.
So I pick Nelson by 1st round TKO via GnP.
Make your pick and lets see whose right on Thursday. And for now check out the videos at the bottom to help get you inspired.

ps…. Inspiration plays a big part in sports, life and certainly in Martial Arts. I am putting together a piece for the blog called Inspiration in Martial Arts….look for it soon.
It’s been a while since I’ve been in school but I understand some students require volunteer or co-op placements. Well it just so happens that Kombat Arts has accommodated many co-op and volunteer placements in the past and …. there may be one two openings right now. This is a great opportunity for any student looking to gain insights into the fitness industry. What better way to learn the business than at the number one martial arts school in Canada. If you are interested in a great opportunity please contact Joey via info@kombatarts.com for more details. And don’t quote me on this, but I think successful candidates get free access to all classes and usage of the best training facility around.
Man, I’m terrible with birthdays. Always late Naw I’m just late giving these announcements. Just wanted to say Happy Bday to a good friend and supporter of RoJ, Ivano Stellato, who celebrated his 18th b-day on Sunday. If you see him please kick him. Thxs, Jd
This is my favorite You-Tube Video right now. It’s Anderson Silva doing something called “Pro Sparring“. Pro Sparring is similar to Regular Sparring but it consists more of a series of back and forth combinations, whereas regular sparring is more unpredictable or random. Pro sparring can be a set number of strikes, such as 2 for 2 or 3 for 3, or as in this video an unknown set but back and forth.
What I often notice around the gym is people always doing regular sparring. While there is nothing wrong with that I think it is also good to incorporate different types of sparring such as hard, light, pro and defensive. This will help keep all of your skills sharp.
Anyways Enjoy….(I’ve seen this probably a hundred times…)

That’s Right Kombat … Kru Mehdi is coming to help prep the Canadian National Team for Battle in Austria.
While he’s here you can arrange for private lessons. Even better, you can split the cost between two, three or four of you. The cost is very reasonable and the experience is well worth it.
Also, for all you aspiring coaches and corner men, Kru Mehdi will be holding a special cornerman course for a very nominal fee. This will include taping hands and more. So if you are interested book your spot now by either registering at the front desk or emailing Joey at info@kombatarts.com.
Kru Mehdi is the founder of the KB-One School in Vancouver and current World Muay Thai Champion, Kru of our Kru, and friend of Kombat Arts.
Sorry I have been so busy and can’t update the blog as often as I would like to….
Anyways here’s an interesting contest. This one is sent to us by our dear friend Kru D.J.Dallaire from Pur Kombat (Arts in Milton). Partial Proceeds go to helping fund the Canadian National Kickboxing Team on their quest to Austria.
…Now for those of you lucky enough to be there on Wednesday, you might have been treated to something special. Joey and Raf brought in some of the top fighters around to help prep the team in a brutal sparring session to help ready these athletes for battle.
Top boxers such as Pedro, Moe and Lexton joined the crusade by helping work their hands while a special guest, a former World Muay Thai Champion, helped out by sparring their Kickboxing.
Let me tell you, it was one impressive evening. So let’s support the team which includes a strong showing from Kombat Arts — Sylwester, Paolo, Nenad and Max — in whatever way we can.
Ivano
(…my apologies if I left anyone out, if I did email Joey or myself and let me know…Thanks)
