Hey guys I finally got some piks from our boys competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the last Ascension BJJ Open Tournament. Enjoy! Jd
Ok, the last day in LA started off with us sleeping in. We are all happily exhausted from all of our training
. We did not train today, mainly because of soreness and just overwhelmed by all of the info. Sly however was not so lucky as he was dragged off by Rob Kaman to Venice Beach to train
.
After training we went to the FigTree Cafe to grab some really good food, and than some shopping along the strip. It was a chilly day at the beach with a lot of clouds blocking out the sun, but we had good company, so it did not matter. We even got to see a parade
After saying our goodbyes to Rob, we hooked up with Professor Salem Assli and the French group for a night of Mexican food. I lost the picture of what I was eating, so unfortunately you won’t see the great food we were experiencing. It seems like this whole trip had 3 great things that I love: training, eating and the company of great friends. We are now back at our motel room to settle down, pack more gear away and watch the UFC. All in all it was a great trip; however we are all looking forward to coming home to our friends and family-Jd
Congrats to all of the athletes that competed and medalled at the Ascension BJJ Open Tournament. Thanks also to the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coaches, Scott Lewis and Frank Marques, and all of the sparring partners. Here is a partial list of some of the Kombat guys that placed: Josh Zeumerman, Lukasz Mogielnicki, Shawn Wilson, Sebastian Deneka, Nick Michaki, Chris Pesavento, Shyam Tanna, Peter Constantine, Nicholas Allen and Greg Deschenes.
For a more complete report go here. I will post piks here on a later date. Again Kongrats guys!!! Jd
After training and our tour we hooked up with Professor Salem and his students from France for a tour of China Town. However before that we had to settle down for some dim sum
. Than it was off to China Town.
Following China Town we went back to the Inosanto Academy where we trained in Shooto and Jeet Kune Do. My brain is hurting from all of the stuff we are learning. Luckily I brought a note pad with me so that I can record and share the stuff with you guys!
The day finally ended with pizza and a movie at Professor’s house with the French contingent. We watched the One Armed Swordsman, a classic Shaw Brothers movie. Man did we zonk out after that! Tomorrow will be our last day here in LA; we are all looking forward to coming home to our friends, family and students

Here are some piks of the sunny weather in LA, our favourite place to eat, where we did our laundry, couple shots of the guys, a shot with the infamous Guro Dan Inosanto, Professor’s cat and some of his weapons. The fourth day started with me peeling myself off the bed; man I am sore
I also think I’m getting a cold, but it’s hard to complain when it is so sunny here
We went off to the Inosanto Academy and started off with some Kali with Guro Dan Inosanto and than we finished off with some MMA. Kali class was awesome, MMA was ok. Tomorrow will be JKD, Shooto and Kali.
After training we did laundry and than went to Professor Salem Assli’s house to hang around and look at his cool toys
. Than the evening ended off by us watching Slumdog Millionaire, which I personally think was 1 of the best movies of 2008, check it out
Jd
Congrats to our athlete Amanda Megson for her 1st fight in boxing. Despite her lose by decision we are all happy for her accomplishments and look forward to her return to the ring. It takes a lot to get into the ring, but you’re in good hands with the Kombat Team

John Roche recently fought in Michigan in a MMA show, beating the local home town favorite in less than 30 seconds! Awesome work John. Basically John came in picked up his opponent, slammed him, eventually got the crossbody, tied his arms up and finished with some nice ground and pound. John brings home the 1st MMA win for Kombat Arts for 2009; again congrats John-Jd
Ok, it is the beginning of the 4th day, but I got in real late and I was / am sore. Yesterday was the actual photo shoot. Salem Assli, 3 of his students, Marc, James and myself were at the photo shoot. We took 700+ photos! Making a book is a pretty intricate detailed process. It is a lot of “hurry up and wait”. Unfortunately the battery died and we had to close up the photo shoot. Professor still has 400+ piks to do!
Sly had a good time with Rob Kaman as he got to train with Rob on Venice Beach! Imagine being outside on the beach hitting pads and doing some crossfighting!
Marc, James and myself went to the Inosanto Academy at night. The 1st class I did was the MMA class, taught by Guro Dan Inosanto himself. This was a really fun class as it involved elements from modern day MMA, the Filipino martial arts, JKD and silat. Than after the class we sat down with Professor Salem and Guro Dan and watched as they discussed the history of the sai (that’s the pik you see). That was fun to watch.
Than we did the JKD class and the Shooto class. The JKD class was a great review for us, as was the Shooto class, but we also learned a couple new moves and conditioning exercises, that I can not wait to bring home for you guys
Anyway, it is a beautiful sunny day and I am outside pecking at my labtop. Class is starting in 1/2 and hour, so I’ll talk to you guys later-Jd
Ok the 2nd day has come to a close for us in LA. Sly got to hang with Rob Kaman and spend some time sparring with Baxter Huxley, as Baxter got ready for his 5 round Muay Thai fight. By the way Baxter has been fighting pro Muay Thai for 9 years, with half of his left arm missing! So no excuses; anyone can train and possibly compete. Sly did very well and will spend the rest of the week sparring and training.
In the evening myself, Marc and James went to the Inosanto Martial Arts Academy to train for 2 hours. The 1st hour was on silat. It was hard work and we had to muster through a lot of unfamiliar techniques; but we had a lot of fun. For the remaining hour we did the Filipino martial arts class. We worked on double stick drills, single stick drills, espada y daga, baston y daga, dagger vs dagger, empty hand vs dagger and sarong vs the dagger. Our brain was fried! Guro Dan Inosanto really is a great instructor, and we all agreed that we would probably be content just to sit and listen to him talk about training and the history of martial arts. We will be training again tomorrow in kali, MMA, JKD and Shooto. Now I need to sleep or I won’t survive the week J -Jd
P.S. here is a short vid on Guro Dan Inosanto showing some silat
Here are the rest of the piks from the MMA / Muay Thai seminar held by Greg Nelson at our Mississauga Kombat Arts location, Jd
